Blære Frugt is a company that primarily imports and packs organic products for sale in Danish supermarkets.
The company began in 1992, as a wholesale producer of organic products.
Since Blære Frugt's own production ceased, the company now deals solely with the import of organic products.
Blære Frugt pack and sell all kinds of organic fruit, and also a variety of smaller vegetables from glass-house produce.
Blære Frugt import from the whole of Europe, though our primary sources are Italy and Spain.
Fruit from overseas is imported via import companies in Holland.
During the course of a number of years, Blære Frugt has built up a network of serious producers from the whole of Europe, each of which put organic produce and reliability first and foremost.
The nursery garden Marienlyst was founded in 1982 by Mogens Hansen, one of the pioneers of organic product growing in Denmark.
The aim was then, as now, to grow healthy and pure plants without the use of chemicals.
Marienlyst has developed into an effective and modern concern, specialising in the growing and packing of carrots and potatoes.
The company is living proof that mass production can be viable without making compromises with the organic concept or with quality.
Today, Marienlyst is the third largest producer of organic carrots in Denmark.
The company has 8-10 employees and works in partnership with 5 other organic farms in the centre of Jutland.
The carrots are covered in straw during the winter, enabling a supply of freshly dug carrots the whole year round.
Apart from potatoes and carrots, for part of the season the company also produces other root vegetables such as parsnip, parsley root and beetroot.
The produce is mainly sent ready-packed to the Danish chain stores and supermarkets, but also a proportion is exported abroad. Regarding the wholesale market, Marienlyst has many faithful customers.
At the highly modern packing plant, other organic producers are able to have their own individual packaging requirements catered for.
Here, the state of the art washing and packing facilities with automatic filling and robot-steered pallet-loading, no packaging requirement is too great.
At Marienlyst, since the entire concern deals solely with organically grown products, any risk of mixing organic with ordinary foodstuffs does not exist.
Danish organic hothouse production. Markhaven cultivates in 2009, an area of almost 8 hectars all under glass in modern hothouses.
The nursery is owned by Klaus Søgård and Jytte Bach. Aromata and plum tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and capsicums are grown.
The entire production is sold to Coop and Irma, whom Markhaven has been in partnership with since 1986.
The vegetables are grown directly in the soil, which is fertilised each year with composted, organic cow dung manure.
The nursery employs around 30 workers mid-season, as plant minders, pluckers and technicians who steer the inside climate, watering and biological pest control.
Apart from these, there are also various sales and packing workers.
The season lasts from around the 1st of March to the end of November.
Quality and taste is preferred over high productivity and it is now proven with American research, that organic tomatoes contain double as much antioxidants, (also called flavonoids), as conventional grown tomatoes.
These protect humans against various illnesses.
The aim is also to work towards reducing the impact on the environment.
Svanholm ØkoGrønt is owned by the large co-operative: Svanholm, who own and run Svanholm estate in Hornsherred, Denmark.
ØkoGrønt is amongst the pioneers who started sale of organic grown produce for supermarket chains.
The company has had many different projects through the years and has gained a great deal of experience.
Not all projects have gone equally well, but today, Svanholm has finely adjusted its production and quantities to a suitable level.
The production of vegetables is entirely organic, as this has always been the sole driving force.
At the moment, the packing station employs between 6 to 10 workers, of which
the majority work in August to September, when the season for fresh green beans is highest.
An enjoyable but very demanding job.
Svanholm makes a point of having a good working atmosphere.
Svanholm represents a group of persons who enjoy what they do and take a pride in sending off as many filled pallets as possible through the system every day.
Apart from Svanholm's own potatoes, coarse vegetables such as parsnips, beetroot and Jerusalem artichokes and green beans from our own fields, we also have an enthusiastic group of other potato growers attached to the packing plant.
By working together and always trying to improve, Svanholm is also open for new trends and ideas that might crop up amongst our varied customers.
Svanholm has excellent co-operation between other growers and does what it can to promote this.
Co-operation is, after all, what Svanholm thrives on.
In the spring, during the period between Danish winter potatoes and the coming of new potatoes, imports from Egypt and Italy are used to fill the gap.
Svanholm works in close co-operation with the export companies and will pay whatever it costs to ensure that the potatoes genuinely come from organic fields.
Svanholm is extremely conservative regarding importing from any unknown producer.
More information about the packing centre or the whole co-operative that forms Svanholm estate can be found here: www.svanholm.dk
The Farm ”Soerisgaard” is situated 40 km northwest of Copenhagen. It is owned and managed by Jan Algreen who is a third generation carrot-grower.
Since 1987 the 100 hectars has been grown organically with crops as carrots, parsnips, potatoes, cabbage, and bread-wheat.
Deposits of sea plants and shellfish over thousands of years have made the soil particularly rich and very suitable for the growing of potatoes and root crops.
The 20 employees are occupied growing and packing local and import products. 30 tons of organic vegetables are sent out every day for supermarkets and the foodservice business.
Skiftekær Økologi is situated on the island of Tåsinge, (south of the island of Fynen). There has been organic cultivation since the summer of 1998, with Marie and Peter.
Denmark's largest building made of straw and wood, a large warehouse, was built 2004 and this is the base for Skiftekærs packing central dealing with potatoes and vegetables.
Apart from potatoes: Annabelle (own brand), Ditta, Sofia, Milva , Blue Kongo, Red Raja etc., there are also early onions of the types Jet Set (yellow) and Red Baron (red) plus various cabbage types, green beans and round, striped or yellow beetroot.
In the strawberry season, the types Honeyeye and Marianne are grown, amongst others.
Other vegetables can include radish, fennel, black radish, turnip, and various winter squash, e.g. Hokkaido, Sweet Dumpling and Stripetti - also sweet corn and parsley etc.
All the crops are packed ready in the packing plant and sold directly to supermarkets and wholesalers in Denmark where COOP, Irma and Solhjulet are the biggest customers. There is also a direct sale to restaurants in the local area and open farmers markets during the summer months.
Skyttes Nursery has worked with organic cultivation for more than 30 years and run an organic nursery for 25 years.
Skyttes has a close partnership with two organic farms owning dairy cows.
By rotating the use of the fields owned by these three concerns, each can obtain optimal all-roundness by cultivating different products in the fields, whilst the cows eat in the clover fields and give their manure back for certain of the vegetables.
Due to this close co-operation, Skyttes has been able for quite a number years, to run an organic nursery where the manure and compost is wholly organic.
Skyttes Nurseries have chosen to concentrate primarily on summer vegetables.
The following are available:
Rhubarb
10th April - 30th June
White asparagus
10th May- 30th June
Iceberg lettuce
10th May - 30th September
Various lettuces
10th May - 30th September
Celery
1st August - 30th October
Fennel
20th July - 30th October
Apart from the above produce, there is a production of organic rhubarb compote, rhubarb chutney and rhubarb juice.
Several other rhubarb-based products are under way.
Skyttes Nurseries find it an exciting undertaking to tackle the many challenges there are attached to growing organic
and to ensure the supply of the best possible fruit and vegetables for the consumer.
Kiselgården Nursery has been cultivating organic and biodynamic since the 1970's.
The produce is mainly from glass-houses and of fresh herbs grown in pots.
The produce is delivered to the retail shops from early spring to autumn.
Kiselgården also produces a number of organic and biodynamic vegetables grown in fields. Some of them, e.g. carrots, various roots, celery, leeks and parsley are sold to retail shops, the rest to open farmer markets and smaller shops.
NB
We only employ first year trainee and provide the salery for that. Food and lodging can be on the farm.

Karin and Kristian Andersen have grown organic vegetables, potatoes, strawberries and corn at Kragegården, since 1986.
In 2007, Kristian Andersen took over the old stone mill grinder, roller and sifters - the whole mill in fact, made mostly of wood.
This was the foundation of the organic mill products where also the grain is grown at Kragegården.
The wheat used is an old type called Dragon, which is noted for giving good baking products.
Alternately, there is 20-30% less yield than with traditional cultivation.
For rye flour, there is another old type used called Petkus, which also is excellent for baking.
The organic mill was taken over by Hvenegaard in Rynkeby, where Bent and Sylvia Hvenegaard Lassen have produced organic flour since 1985.
The flour is produced only by placing an order.
Now Bent Hvenegaards traditions are passed on to Kristian Andersen, the eighth generation at Kragegården.
To grind grain to flour is not something one just does, it has to be done in the proper manner.
The grain is ground five times in order to get the optimal result with the best baking qualities.
The organic mill's flour is light golden in colour, which is the result of the husk being ground together with the grain, instead of in the case of industrially produced flour, which has the husk worn off.
The grinding machine is of stone that "cold-grinds" the flour together with the husk.

Together with his wife, Janni, he is in charge of the farm.
The main crops are potatoes and carrots, which are sent off to the packing plant at Marienlyst.
Apart from these, cerealsare the principle part of the crop rotation.
Elmegaard Organic Farm & Energy
The estate was founded in 1848 by the great-great-grandfather of Bjarne Viller Hansen, west of Jutland's high ridge between the seas of Østersøen and Kattegat to the east, and Vesterhavet to the west.
Originally, it was heather and moorland when the first 3 generations cultivated the land, planted hedges as windbreaks and gave the earth lime and marl.
Bjarne Viller Hansen took over the running of the estate in 1996 when it was made over to solely organic growing and a production of vegetables was established with the main weight on carrots and potatoes.
Carrots are cultivated over 123 hectars, potatoes approx. 49 hectars, parsley root 6 hectars and strawberries 4 hectars.
The rest is used for cereals, grass seed and clover.
In co-operation with a neighbour whose land is being converted in 2008, there has been an extra 501 hectars devoted to potatoes, cereals, grass seed and clover.
Elmegård is at present building a biogas plant, for the production of organic fertiliser solely based on organic waste-bioproducts with the aim of making Elmegaard and the neighbour's production self-supplying with regard to fertiliser and at the same time, considerably reduce CO2 levels.
CO2 neutral electricity will also be produced from the biogas, which will fade out the use of fossil fuels used in the traditional electricity production.
The future production of vegetables will be increased, as there will be fields and fertiliser enough for a larger area, so there is the possibility of growing more fertiliser-needy crops in the future.
The produce will be marketed
as so-called "CO2 light" products, since the internal usage and production can be documented as being less environmentally harmful with less CO2 and methane gas escape.
During production, the emphasis is on flavour and the ability to keep fresh, and this means a variety of types are used in order to retain the best taste and crispness during the whole harvesting period, which starts in July and finishes in May. The carrots are harvested every day and delivered to the packing plant the same day, which means that the good flavour is retained.
At Elmegaard Organic Farm & Energy there are 4 permanent employees and approx. 15-20 seasonal workers to mainly weed in the vegetables.

Broendegården is a farming estate of 123 hectars set on west Fynen and beside the large lake of Fønsvang.
The estate cultivates cereals, clover and vegetables.
A proportion of the vegetables are grown for sale on the spot. Brussel sprouts, sweet corn and celery root are grown in a larger number for wholesale.
Michael Mohr Jensen runs the estate together with one other employee. Extra help is used in the high season.
A side line production is oyster mushrooms grown in the autumn and summer months.
The oyster mushrooms are grown in wheat straw.
The straw is chopped up and moistened and then subjected to steam to sterilise it.
Care is taken not to overly heat, so no risk of the cellulose in the straw being destroyed, as this is the nourishment the oyster mushrooms will use.
After cooling, the straw is put into sacks and strewn with muselium powder. Inside the sacks the temperature rises, showing that germinating is under way. After 14-21 days, the sacks are quite white and firm inside.
The first mushrooms appear after about 4-5 weeks. The next crop appears after a further 5 weeks.
A third crop can be plucked before the sacks are finished and must now be replaced.
Morten Ovenskov took over the farm in 2002 but it had already been organic cultivated from 1989.
Ovenskovgård grows potatoes, leeks, celery, onions and carrots.
All the vegetables are sent away to packing plants both in Denmark and abroad. Apart from these, various cereals are grown alternately.
